OK, PCIe-2 is on the pi, officially not supported for PCIe-3 but seems to work flawlessly as such. But it's just one lane. Adding NVME for faster storage is like having a horse do a dog's pull. It's a waste, it's over the top, a good sd-card is much more in sync with the pi, and I suggest eMMC (or UFS, faster if not for price) is a much better fit for enhancing storage related performance.
Off topic, but I've been saying that since the Pi5 launched. And don't forget that for larger capacity drives spinning rust still gives the best TB/$ and a decent SATAIII HDD can saturate a USB3 link or PCIe v2 lane in a sustained transfer. The main improvement you'll get with NVMe is much faster seek times but those will mostly be hidden by the disc cache unless you're doing lots of small, random, and uncached I/O.
