Most likely reason is that the automounter failed, you have something that is writing to the directory (and creating it, if it is not present). Automounter then sees the existing directory and simply appends a digit to the mount point when it mounts it the next time.
fstab entries will attempt to mount exactly as specified. You can however mount over an existing directory which can create all sorts of fun and confusion. The mount will "hide" anything existing in the directory, such that you can have a full filesystem, with a directory structure that looks empty.
